August 2021

In early July, I took a trip to Cape Cod with two of my boys to visit the home of my parents. It has been two years since they left to live with my brother. It was a bittersweet time for me. Cape Cod has always been a part of my life. I spent all of my summers there as I was growing up, and many summer vacations with my own children. It is a place that will always feel like a second home to me.

I am an early riser and love to walk in the mornings with a clear head and a deep appreciation of the day. It is a short walk down to the beach and I found myself there early every day taking in the ocean air and quiet space before the activity of the day began. There are so many things there that resonate with me—the ocean and sand, boats, seashells, seagulls, cottages and marshland—that fill me with a deep desire to put these emotions and feelings into paintings. There were several days that we spent together exploring different beaches, harbors and places to fish, a favorite pastime of my son Sam. There is an abundance of beauty in the landscape of Cape Cod, all of which I am inspired by. It is such a different kind of beauty to the rolling hills and farmland of my home here in Kennett Square. Both are great sources of inspiration to me.

As soon as I returned home, new paintings began. I find it most exciting to create work from strong emotional connections to places, and all the things that make them special and unique. As the seasons begin to change, so shall my work again. It does seem to follow a pattern, as I am most interested in putting paint onto the canvas in direct response to my experiences as they happen. Soon I will be faced with the beauty of the change of seasons here, in Chester County, and no doubt that will be what shows up in my work next. But for now, I will continue to soak in every last drop of summer.
